Deleting posts without notice
I need to get something off my system. I like to believe I am a good participant of Fumbbl. I am not the best coach but not the worst coach either. I try to chat and be friendly to my opponents and they almost always respond well to me. One new coach even made a point of thanking me in a blog post for the warm welcome. Sometimes I comment on blogs or forum posts, and when I do, I usually do so to make what I perceive to be a constructive contribution. I keep my tone civil and I do not insult other participants.

It is the second time now that a post of mine has been deleted without prior warning, or even an explanation, not even on request. I shall gladly abide by any decision of the moderation, no matter what I personally think of it, but I think I at least deserve being talked to. This way of deleting posts without a word I consider rude and inappropriate.

depends what your comments were really imo. If you swore, named and shamed a fellow coach, posted a personal insult, tried to post something that would infringe on GWs IP then you should know these things are not allowed.

it happens on every board I've ever been a part of. Not saying it's right, but these admins are unpaid and are using their own time to deal with posts etc. so may not always be able to contact people as to why they removed posts. Apart from anything else, they probably have to remove so many it gets tedious and would be increasingly time consuming to write a PM to everyone! :D

@ Garion, I do not knowingly violate the rules of Fumbbl so by my own best judgment, also supported by looking at other, unmoderated posts, the two posts that got deleted were not even breaking the rules. But as I said, if a moderator tells me differently, I shall gladly and without discussion accept that call. I might want to modify my own post to remove the offence and have it remain as a contribution to the disucssion, instead of being deleted.

Well looks like that whole topic has been deleted, which is the right call imo as a large % was breaking the site rules, even though there's probably a point there.

I did see Verminado's post and yes it was breaking the site rules. So it was the right call to delete it.

Regarding this topic directly.

*All members have read the site rules, breaking the site rules lead to consequences. If a site rule is broken you have to accept the consequences no matter what they are.
*As all site members have read and agreed to the site rules, there's no need for staff to pm with an explanation.
*As already pointed out, staff don't want to waste their time doing this. FUMBBL already takes up a large % of freetime as it is.
*Getting into pm conversations with members is a lose/lose scenario for staff. It's unlikely they'll agree, it will most likely become confrontational, and it will take up time with a pointless debate.
*Regarding the author's comments on my blog. I can't really recollect deleting a blog that wasn't direct spam. I think I may have deleted 1 or 2 which were highly inappropriate or breaking the site rules.
*As for deleting forum replies. Well I made a forum topic on it http://fumbbl.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=23507&highlight=swearing here i stated what I would and would not accept.

Just reading through this. If you want to know the rules (which IMO everyone should) here they are:

https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=help&op=rules

and we do get an awful lot of fun things to do around here... might not have the time to PM a coach with a full explanation of why something happened. usually blog posts are deleted for naming a coach (to shame them hence the term) or swears. Don't generally see messages going out about it as some of us figure its pretty understandable.

Thank you for the reply, harvestmouse.

I see that now the whole blog has been deleted, which is consistent. Singling my comment out was, from my perspective, not consistent, but again, that wasn't even my point. This is not about my opinion on site rules or the way they are enforced. I would hope you realize I am not deliberately trying to be a pain, I am trying to contribute in a good spirit, even if by your standards I do not always succeed. Therefore, it frustrates me when I am treated like a base troll..

It's not a big deal, just something that triggers me and I really needed to get off my system. I'm happy to leave it at that.

Maybe it'll make you feel better as well it wasn't HM that deleted your post. I took out all posts in that blog that name/shamed the coach involved.

Dode from cyanide PMs you when he deletes your post, well he did to me any way :)

It's a bit like noob hunting. You can troll all you like as long as you do it within the rules. ;)
Posted by krysskroz on 2013-06-24 06:18:41
I agree with the OP. Let's assume that we all have read the site rules, which moderators pretty much have to do, then if we post something breaking those rules, obviously we did not understand that rule. Simply removing the offending post silently does nothing to correct the behavior of the poster, it only protects the community from the post itself.
Posted by koadah on 2013-06-24 08:12:32
The rules are pretty obvious. The vast majority of people will not need an explanation.

In most cases I guess that the explanation is going to be "read the rules". ;)

Well, all I can say is, I have been an active member of several large, geeky internet communites for many years and Fumbbl is the only one where "delete without notice" is the standard procedure of moderation. I can see the point for IP infringements, of course, but for one mild swear (not directed at a person) in a longer forum post by a poster who is not a notorious troll? Personally I would not think it asking too much to tell the user to edit his post, especially if it's a first time offence. I was honestly confused, searched the thread several times for my post because it did not even occur to me that it could have been deleted by a moderator. All I'm saying is, it's rude. Some people don't care about that, I do.

I see your point but we've been told.

Yeah, I was the **** offender. This was posted after my post got deleted.
Posted by koadah on 2013-06-24 16:47:30
So you got your explanation. Consider it your notice.
Posted by Verminardo on 2013-06-24 17:07:22
Well, the point of a notice is that you get a chance to correct your misbehaviour first.
Posted by koadah on 2013-06-24 19:05:07
OK, so you lost a couple of posts but now you know what happens.
That is history now. That was April.

You do not need any more warnings or notice.
Posted by Verminardo on 2013-06-24 19:29:48
Yeah, who cares, right? That's the bottom line.
