Fix, Don't Fight
Pastorn's blog got me thinking this morning.

The thing that jumps out at me in the argument is that there's no point to arguing the facts, here. Regardless of who is right, the actions that need to be taken remain identical.

If Fumbbl is losing coaches: let's get more coaches.

If Fumbbl is gaining coaches: let's get more coaches!

I don't think there's too many valid arguments that state the site would be worse off with more coaches. I think it's very clear that the more coaches are on the site, the better site it will be. So rather than arguing which direction the playerbase is heading, why not take the only sensible course of action?

The question of *how* to get new players, now that's worth a debate. I have a few ideas, and I'd love to see any others you may have.

1. Get people to play Blood Bowl!

Not just Fumbbl, but the actual game of Blood Bowl. I saw it mentioned in Pastorn's blog comments somewhere, that an entire generation of gamers has passed since GW last supported the TT product. I know some of you dorks still wargame it up. Get your copy of Blood Bowl out, and teach some new people! If they already love the game, the super-smooth free online version will be much more appealing.

2. Find a way to encourage new players.

I've seen quite a few new coaches get discouraged because -frankly- they aren't as good as the veteran coaches on Fumbbl. The only real solution to this, of course, is for these new coaches to play a ton of matches and get better. But we need ways to get them over that hump of newness. The 145 Club seems like a great place to start, but I'm not sure how many new coaches know about it.

That's all I got, unfortunately. Teach people how great Blood Bowl is, then keep their spirits up when they stink at it.

Comments welcome, thanks for reading!

I think cyanide is actually a good thing for Fumbbl and BB as a whole. I picked up a copy of Cyanide's BB without ever playing BB thinking it was going to be a football ish game. I liked the game so i began to search to learn more. Found Fumbbl and now Cyanide collects dust on my Shelf.

I don't see how the site will be off better or worse with more coaches. If there would be only 7 people on the site that would be still enough to run an enjoyable league.
If there are many people all good.... but do we need them? nah... this isnt a commercial site... more people might donate more? ...but they also consume more ressources and firstly this is a free site... Just am trying to say: I wouldn't be too worried. If people wanna come they come, if they don't then don't.

What Wreckage said :)

but as a hole it would be nice to see BB grow despite being an unsurpoted old genatation game.

Get people to play more TT, the danish championship was the biggest we ever had (43 people) so the curve is upgoing in denmark I hope :)

Fewer coaches means a longer wait when looking for games unless people are a lot less picky.

Something like the Box does not work at all without a certain number.

Though Stuntyleeg.com worked fine with a tiny number I think the new client effectively killed that.

Well one thing's for sure.

FUMBBL needs more womenz!!!

The real question is: 'Does Christer want more coaches?' No other question matters. The answer I think is, yes he does. However quality only, and a lot of internet gamers, simply don't show the respect worthy of playing on FUMBBL.

oo, we needz noo peeps?

I will up my welcoming messages in forums and thingies to make all happies for noo mens.

I ran a Blood Bowl league at my local gaming store and many people had the intention of playing on fumbbl once they gained a better understanding of the game.
One of the players who did join got his face punched right off and he stopped playing on fumbbl because of it.

It would make more sense for him to start in academy or some kind of beginners league but he did get turned off by skill differential.

Quality over quantity! I'd rather we focus on making FUMBBL a friendlier environment. There's way too much toxicity from the usual suspects. I'd rather we shrink in size if it meant getting rid of those killjoys.

gino - one can't save wusses from themselves.

I started playing the TT version back in the 80's when i was a lad, but grew out of GW and started computer games (which i should have grown out of since, but still...), and i personally wouldn't have got back involved were it not for the Cyanide game.
I found FUMBBL by accident while looking for strategies/skill suggestions, and i'm very glad i did :)

On the other hand were it not for the fact that i'm an experienced gamer and expect to lose at any game until i've played it some, i would have left here after my first game.
Being beaten 4-0 and having 2 players killed is a bit much when you're playing for fun (though obviously the other chap was having loads :p ).

I know the games violent by nature (and that's why i love it), but some kind of begginer or sandbox type league would seriously help the site retain new coaches.

Just my thoughts...

I really liked [A]cademy.

Even if there are cool things in the pipeline it would have been nice to have old [A]cademy running until they are ready.
Posted by Bobs on 2012-07-12 10:51:42
From what I understand there is a fair but of work being done by a dedicated few to get a much improved academy division up and running.
Will help immensely to get new players into the swing of things.
Posted by Ranensol on 2012-07-12 11:16:22
When i read about the different leagues when i started here the Academy did sound ideal, and it was a bit daunting to go straight into a ranked arena.
If there's something in the pipeline there that'd be ideal.

I don't know what the plans are but I'm wondering if it isn't a lot of effort create something that won't be used any more than the old one was.

In the mean time we have nothing.

In then end it still comes down to people being prepared to help out and support the division.
Posted by BooAhl on 2012-07-12 11:22:03
I'm not saying this should be done. Because I think it will draw to much bad attention. But the easiest way to draw people onto this site is to have something similiar to the Cyanide world cup, with cash prizes.

It shouldn't be done. But that is the easiest way to go.
Posted by koadah on 2012-07-12 11:35:49
No cash prizes! That is just horrible. :D

But a big tournament that ANYONE could take part in would be great.

e.g. A major that allowed the use of pre-built 'house' teams.
I think they are being considered as part of the new [A]cademy.

As it stands if someone want's to play in a Major they have to build a team first. Not as much as in LRB4 but most probably won't fancy their chances using a TV1000 team.
Posted by BooAhl on 2012-07-12 11:47:38
I said it would a bad idea.

Isn't the FC open TV?

But yes a free build up to 2000 TV would be great fun. The diversity would be awesome. I can see a big [L] tourney, that FUMBBL sanctions, alomst as big as the FC. The big boys are probably working on it as we speak.

The issue I have with recruiting more players is that you are not allowed to play against friends.
Posted by Macavity on 2012-07-12 18:13:14
Fine, you right bastions! I'll come back. Tell all your friends that if they start playing, they might get to play me. Recruitment will skyrocket!
Posted by koadah on 2012-07-12 19:26:35
@Maxiavelli That is what the [L]eague division is for.
