I'm tough, you ain't
I've noticed a trend in Blackbox coaches. It's the attitude that Blackbox is a superior division, and that Ranked is for cowards. There's so much wrong with that. Enough that I felt it was blog-worthy ;)

1. No choice you can make in online Blood Bowl makes you tough. There are no consequences to your dice, your teams, or your division.

2. One of the concepts that I enjoy about the box that is lost on so many people... it is the *opposite* of an ego-boosting division. CR is on your main page, BWR is a secret. If you want to crow about how great you are at Blood Bowl, play ranked. Don't play the box and crow about how your division is superior.

3. If you're playing Blood Bowl for any reason other than to have fun, you're doing it wrong. I play the box because I enjoy it. Not only is the box not superior, nor ranked inferior... they're both formats to PLAY A BOARD GAME. The idea one is better than the other is flawed.

Finally, relating to this final point... I do think a friendly rivalry is healthy, fun, and worthwhile. I would love to see the suggestions about a Box v Ranked major executed. The NFL did this, and ended up with the super bowl. MLB still does it. It would be fun, so long as it was kept in the spirit of 'We all enjoy the same game, let's play it together, eh?'

I think anything more hostile than that (and there is plenty of Ranked v Blackbox hostility) is detrimental to the community. You know damn well that the vast majority of the population-at-large does not and cannot relate to our hobby. Why fragment the number of people you enjoy chatting with further? Why exclude a large fraction of the *tiny* fraction of human beings who share our interest? Seems counterintuitive.

So, in conclusion, I've written several hundred words that boil down to: don't be a jerk. I still feel it was worth saying. Don't be a jerk. Don't tell me my version of fun is stupid, and I'll high five you for your awesome elfball team.

Thanks for reading,

I agree with you on most of it. But I think discussions on how the divisions work is overall a good thing that will only benefit and develope Fumbbl into something even better.

And yes, a R vs B major would be very fun. But I think the bookies would bet their money on the R teams, who has better possibilities in team building, recovery etc.

I think a lot of people would like to see the Fumbbl Cup opened up to both divisions. Alternatively there could be a mini round robin tournement with the winners of the various majors all taking part against each other.

Great Blog about those idiot jerks that play Black Box ...

Just kidding. Yes, bring back the love to FUMBBL.

Not rated 7, because I can't. :-(

Agree with you 100%. Thumbs up!

@Grod
If you want love on fumbbl, go to Synn or Spoony (Depends on your taste)

OBS! Go to Russo if your a sheep...

I agree 100%. Rated 6.

Noticed a trend? lol. It depends on how seriously you take whats written in IRC. It all seems fine to be.

Although I would love a R V B major! Who cares about the R teams being more pimped? Bring it on! I'm with B!

KILL R! Thats what I say! BURN THEMMMMMM!

(Then we can watch the likes of f0rd/JackDaniels etc. abuse R to get their teams up to scratch)

:)

Ranked v. BlackBox Supernatural Bowl!

Qualifiers for a 16 team event, 8 from each "Conference". All play is within your conference until the finals.

And the great thing about a ranked vs Box tournament is that us Box coaches are on a win win situation.

If a ranked team wins, it was a pimped up cherrypicker anyway.

If a Box team wins it is because the box makes you strong. (well not in real life of course, sitting there clicking a mouse all day probably doesn't help muscle development much at all)

;)

Rated one for the last line. Never, ever compliment someone for having an elfbowling team.
Posted by CircularLogic on 2010-03-02 17:14:34
The only point I can agree on is 1). Which ironically contradicts your blog title. I guess that`s just intended irony on the title part.

2) If the box is the opposite of an ego-boosting division, then why are you shown the top 10 coaches each time you want to join the box? I doubt that the any R coach has seen the coach table as often as a box coach has seen the blackbox ranking.

3) That reads "If you play blood bowl in any other way and for any other reason than I do, you are wrong". Nice to see, that you have the absolute say on how BB should be played.

Rated 6, because I agree with it. And for the last line. An awesome Elfbowling team is something to be proud of.
Posted by Zombie69 on 2010-03-02 18:29:01
Chrome_ghoul, it's something you got blacklisted for. And an elfbowling team can never be awesome.

Notes! As if a blog wasn't self-indulgent enough, I have notes!

Circ: 2+3: Fair points, both. I guess I just ignore the top 10 BWR, and take solace in the fact that no one can see mine :)
And no, of course I don't have some supreme grasp of how/why folks should play. I worded my statement very poorly if this was the impression I gave, because it's just the opposite. I just meant that whatever draws you to the game is the 'right way' (within the site rules, of course). I guess I was equating 'fun' with the game's intrinsic draw. If you want to play the game in a way in which you don't have fun, but still want to play the game, I can't really criticize that either.

Zombie: Eh. I don't see how elfballing is enjoyable, but again... somebody who elfballs still has much more in common with me than somebody who has a totally different hobby. I'll still offer that guy a high-five (and some good natured ribbing, of course).

Ballcrusher: Absolutely. Discussing ways one or both divisions could better operate is healthy and valuable. I'm not saying the topic should never be brought up, just that it should not (in my opinion) be brought up in anger, or defensiveness.

Thanks for the thoughts all. As always, I appreciate it :)

probably the best post/blog/rant/whatever on the box vs ranked topic

well done sir and I like the idea of the ranked vs box major

Fantastic take. I enjoy ranked and blackbox... when I play/
Posted by f_alk on 2010-03-02 19:40:08
Arrange the Black Cup and the FUMBBL Cup to be parallel. Put both winners up against each other. :)
Posted by Chrome_ghoul on 2010-03-02 20:05:03
Zombie69: Elfbowling is one of the finest ways to enjoy Blood Bowl. If you excell at it, you should be pleased with yourself. And if you build up an awesome team, it's always something to be proud of.

Best blog on the subject yet. Thanks for taking the time to write this.

the winner of the B major against the winner of the fumbbl cup, superbowl style :D
Posted by Zombie69 on 2010-03-03 00:05:20
Chrome_ghoul : elfbowling is one of the best ways to destroy the balance in ranked. If you do it, you should be ashamed of yourself, not proud.
Posted by Chrome_ghoul on 2010-03-03 00:10:19
Zombie69: I'll never feel ashamed for playing a game that is enjoyable, in a way that I enjoy. The best thing about FUMBBL is it's ability to accomodate everyone , however they like to play. I don't like playing bashers too much, other people can't get enough. Good for them, it's a game of subtle and varied blends.
Posted by Zombie69 on 2010-03-03 03:19:34
I wouldn't mind if you played elf vs elf every game in League, but in Ranked, which is supposed to be a competitive environment, elfbowling destroys the balance and creates unnaturally strong teams for majors. Therefore if you elfbowl, you get on my blacklist. I won't contribute to your destruction of the balance of Ranked (at least, not consciously).

And nobody should compliment anyone for elfbowling, because then, they're also part of the problem and encouraging bad behavior that destroys the competitive playing field that Ranked is supposed to be.

Sounds to me like your jealous because we have more fun than you do :P
