Skaven probably wont help you improve much as an overall coach because they are one of the top top top tier teams and dont play like any other. Also just play in Black box if you dont want to pick.
Try something like CD if you want to learn a good grinding game. Vampires if you a challange, Humans or Lizardmen for a versatile team, high Elves for an Elf team.

Also your CR will probably increase more if you play high CR coaches. Because when you win you get more points.

I have played alot in the box but stopped recently as i wanted a varity of games. Im not going to moan about the amount of Claw POMB players but wanted to play vs other type of teams. I have made these players myself so im no-one to moan about them.
Im thinking elves. My humans i made got smashed and retired first game. Although they are still a team i would like to play well

Whatever you start with in [R], play a Royal Rookie Rumble with your team! It's fun and you don't get the chance to pick. ;-) At the moment, there's at least one starting every week, I think.
Good luck with your efforts and have fun, Stan! :-)
(Hopefully see you in 7s soon, too!)

Go for High Elves. They are very versatile, but tricky to get going until you learn what you are doing with them. Try the box again. The variety is amazing. Check any of my Box teams and you will see a very wide variety of opponents.

Variety is a lot better in the box nowadays and I'm loving the games I get, I wouldn't worry about the claw POMB'ers as you very quickly learn how to beat them.
Undead are a good team to play with, just protect the ghouls :D

I would start with either HE or DE. And if you really want a challenge, in finding games or game play, go dwarves ;)
Those 3 teams will give you enough of a challenge if you accept every fair challenge you get offered.

After 1555 games and you want to know what team to play as? heh, haven't you played them all?
Well I certainly don't have many games under my belt, but coming in as a new coach with essentially ZERO BB experience, I went Norse, because they seemed to have a bit of everything. Meaning that I should (in theory) get the opportunity to try different styles depending on the opponents team.
Doesn't quite work that way, I can't elfball, and I can't just bash anyone, but, I can pick my spots and try to learn when best to just throw everyone into the scrum, or when best to try and keep everyone disengaged.
Also the low AV punishes you more when you make silly plays, forcing you to stay patient and not take too many crazy risks.
So that's my 2c as a noob coach. Or Undead like ea said, they can also do a bit of whatever is needed, and are more resilient due to regen (and higher av), but maybe that doesn't punish you enough when you make a bad decision ;)

I have gone for HE for now and see how i get on with them. So will start by just adding them to GF and wait for offers i think. Thx for all the input.

Humans, Necro, Lizards
Good teams to play across the board.

my 2 cents on how to stop "picking" so to speak.
Add team to gamefinder. Who ever the GF matches you up with, immediatly challenge for a match. Regardless of team, coach or race.
Problem of picking is solved. It has worked for me for over 3 years.

I haven't done any picking at all since I started playing here about a month or so ago. I just add to gamefinder and either challenge the best TV-match, either (more commonly, as I'm a lazy man) just wait for someone else to challenge me and accept it.
This has probably been a part of my low win-percentage, but it's been getting better lately. I also really think not doing any picking has contributed to improving my game. Just got my 10th win as well, so huzzah!

dont really want to suggest a team - but if you have trouble with picking, create a team in the blackbox. an alternative could be a royal rookie rumble i believe, that would be my choice in ranked.
if ya need a bad coach to try some potentially easy ranked games ... ah, no ... you wanted to stop that. :-)
good luck!
