Time shift
Heads up! It's that time again. It's legislatively mandated "time shift" time.

That's right. Next Sunday 10 March, folks who use American-ish clocks will be adjusting their clocks for daylight saving which messes up our mental conversions of time vs Server time.

The parts of Europe which still observe daylight saving and Server time will change three weeks later, on 31 March.

In early April (first weekend), the countries south of the Equator which still observe DST will change their clocks... in the opposite direction.

(Congratulations to Syria and Iran which recently ended their use of DST, and Samoa and Fiji who ended it not long before them. I sincerely hope the promised end of DST happens in my lifetime.)

Oh, we've reached "that time of the year" already ? :(

Aussie daylight savings ends (our clocks go back an hour) on 7 April this year.

Not sure why there is so much hate for day light savings time though, unless you live close to the equator. Does anyone really want the sun coming up before 5am and setting before 6:30pm?

My hate for DST comes from having to change the clocks which throw things into confusion... especially when folks change the clocks in different directions and on different days. I don't really care what time the clock says when the sun comes up or goes down. Where I am, I'm gonna get between 9.5 and 15 hours of full daylight thru the year. During the summer, the sun starts coming up before 5am anyway... and when I was living in Canada DST was pushing full dark to after midnight in the Summer. (But really.. the time on the clock doesn't matter to me very much.)

But more, my hate for DST comes from the US Congress changing the dates on which it would change, which effectively broke the old (programmable) clock I had which automatically changed the time for me so that it was then wrong four times a year. The hatred grew as I had folks work over the hours during the change and the confusion it caused. :-(

But mostly it come from the idea that cutting an hour from one part of the day and tacking it to a different part of the day changes the day somehow. (Worse, there are people who believe it means there are more hours of daylight BECAUSE of DST.) Seems to me if when the sun comes up or goes down is important to people, then adjust the time when you do things like wake up and go to sleep rather than change the time on the clock.

South of the equator, there's like four countries which apparently still use DST. And most of them are in that first weekend in April, but yep... Paraguay has to do it two weekends early... so it'll be two weeks different from the rest of the countries in the Southern Hemisphere, not just the more standard one. And most years Australia and New Zealand end DST on the same weekend... but not in 2029... in 2029, they'll shift a week apart. :-( Of course Apophis swings by a week after y'all get back into sync and maybe it'll take us all out.

(My real answer is to throw my hands in the air and tell everyone to just switch to UTC. Sure, I'll be going to bed at 0130 and getting up at 1000 give or take a couple hours... but when I travel and coordinate with my wife on when I should call home, no one needs to convert. There will just be the ONE time. And when humanity heads off to orbit or other locations off-planet, we'll all have that one time to work with.

I figure I have the same odds of seeing that in my lifetime as seeing the US give up non-metric measurements. >sob<)

Decimal time is the answer

did anyone remember Swatch's internet time, .beat? that project to divide a day in DECIMAL? those were the crazy times of Win98 and the Sidewinder Dual Strike controller...
