Alternative title:
dogs chasing cars
Hi, I'm an addict.
I get fixated on specific topics for months. I played single player, narrative StarCraft, Warcraft 3 and Stronghold countless times. Somehow my body made me quit smoking and that's one of my luckiest escapes. The way I deal with addictions is to try and "finish" them. Try everything and be done with it. My current and seemingly long term addiction is Blood Bowl, of course.
How do you
complete BB? Can you even do that?
Earlier on in my learning experience with the game, when I was fully a BB and FUMBBL newb, I set myself a target to have at least more combined wins and draws than losses. A while back I mentioned that on discord, and Christer pointed out that I was pretty close to the reverse, that is, more wins than draws and losses combined. That milestone came and went, too.
At some point my target became to be the second FUMBBL coach to ever finish the box grid, after the legendary BillBrasky. Actually it turns out, playing every roster for 100+ games each, really makes you a bit better at this. I came sort of close to fulfilling that target too, then GW kept releasing new teams, and then the old Box died a quiet death.
People danced on its corpse. All in jest of course.
With the advent of [C] the new target became to be the first to finish its pristine grid. It took me lots of cajoling to get those stunties to face dorfs and zons, and as always
gobs are easier to entice than flings. Now I've finally got the Lizards VS Vamps match-up (thanks spelledaren, you're a true gentleman!) so I can claim to have finished the [C] grid first.
Too many people to thank but, DrClaes, Cobreti, Xpher, to name a few, great people all around on this website.
Eventually during the box hunt I stumbled upon tournaments as a way to make Box halflings bearable. I did around 20
Rumbles with them, got totally hooked. If you haven't done FUMBBL tournaments yet, mate, you're missing out. As close as it gets to true and proper BB, which is, of course, scheduled league from a rookie start, with playoffs at the end.
The addiction kicked in, and the trophies eventually came. Most recent is Halflings, not in Rumbles oddly enough, but in a Major"s qualifier. Won a couple of those, too, and lost a Major's final. Putting this list here so I can keep track.

What felt like the worst to get was TKs, with 3 Rumbles finals lost before the eventual success. The easiest probably a tie between Khorne and Norse, both on first attempts. The former is way more surprising than the latter, but Norse have been known to be tricky to win four games in a row for some. There's other addicts in that cauldron, Melmoth, MerryZ, geggster, storr, SideShowBob, Joost... You learn a bit more every time. As they say at the end of a Go game, thanks for teaching me.
Now just 3 are left to catch.
One is pact/renegades, lost a Brawl final once against the excellent Flytime (welcome back!) and I have no idea how to make them work now, rogar is a great buff but probably the only one, and then you start noticing the myriad ways they got worse. Can they even smallkosp anymore? They'll be my next TT leeg challenge.
One is GOBS, the first team that I built and painted on purpose for Tabletop, none of that "I found them on the core box" sillyness. I love them, I hate them, I can't give up on them, no idea how to get them to that title. ArrestedDevelopment says XFL Goblin Qualifier was always their best shot, go figure.
One is BOBS, took to semifinals in my tabletop League and liking them more and more. Thanks tussock for giving me advice when I was giving up on them! Now that brawls are back, thanks to razmus running them, they might have a chance there, because they certainly don't have great hopes against the
dominant rosters in the starless Rumbles.
Maybe the new targets to set are in League, maybe in CIBBL, maybe achieve some decent results in Resurrection leagues, or maybe try, seriously, to win a Major?
Get rid of the excuses and crutches, "I didn't win but I took stunties anyway so..." sort of reasoning. Give up on the Cinderella rosters and go back to trying my best, my actual best. Sometimes humility is just a cover for arrogance and contempt. The mantra "I'm bad at this" stays, but perhaps it just means something else now.
What's the moral of this rambling, self-aggrandising, meandering tirade? Always set new targets. Enter the tournaments, try to win one sometime. Get to a certain tipping point in your winrate. Find harder and harder matches, overcome the odds, learn from your mistakes and regroup. We can't all be Malmir but don't let that stop you. Give in to the addiction.
Thanks FUMBBL, thanks Christer, thanks for all the fun and for having built this community.
