The very first
FUBAR Cup is upon us! Kickoff is tomorrow, and I still can't decide which team to enter. My
Pro Elves are in the best shape. If I were hoping to win it I would enter them. On the other hand, there would be a poetic justice in entering one of my three oldest teams instead. Three of the teams that gave me my first games on FUMBBL are on
page one of my first played matches. I created them at the same time and then activated all three with a few others IIRC, long before ARR was even a twinkle in the eye. Each of them holds both a soft spot in my heart but also has been the source of some frustration that has caused me to shelve them for a time. I have been itching to take one of them back off the shelf and this may be a fitting chance...
First, and most accomplished would be the
Battlefrogs. This team made it to the semifinals of a Black Cup back in the day, only to have their hopes dashed by a coach who timed me out seconds before I attempted a pickup and score a few minutes after telling me "no rush, take your time". Since we scheduled the match at a crap time for me, due to a sick kid, we had PMed about the details and this timeout came as a surprise! I was new enough then not to have realized that the proper protocol would have been to stop the game and ask for a tournament admin to rule, but I played on anyway, determined to overcome. Alas, it was not to be. These days the frogs are bloated and will have a hard time winning a tournament. But I don't have the time or motivation to rebuild them until I can wipe the slate clean and overcome that lingering bad taste. Even when you
win, sometimes you lose. And then other times you just
lose, despite the best efforts of everyone involved. But either way, rebuilding frogs is long, painful work. Perhaps the FUBAR is where they could shake the dust off and return to glory?
Second, one of my favorite early teams, and the team I enjoyed the most when I first started playing on FUMBBL:
Von Marx. As a wide-eyed newcomer to online Blood Bowl (and pretty new to the game overall) vampires struck me as some of the craziest, most fun around. And good times were had! Right up until the time that the best coach I had played up to that point accused me of cheating with them. Cheating? How could this be? Apparently in the old client, and early days of the switchover there was vamp abuse. Though I didn't know about it, it was the kind of thing that soured me on the team for a long time. I tried unboxing them again at one point, but it didn't stick. This team I can't give up on, but I don't want to play either. Help! Maybe their FUBAR play-style would be perfect for the FUBAR Cup...
And last but, well, also least:
Short Fuze. Victors in
The Great Halfling Battle III, and much beloved for many reasons dear to my heart. They have earned my hardest fought
tie ever. Never give up, never surrender! I keep wanting to have another fling bender, but every time I start I lose a tree, it seems. These guys would provide maximum lulz and couldn't really be much more FUBAR anyway. Perhaps a hilarious early exit or improbable streak of wins could light that fuze again.
Help! Thoughts welcome, and don't forgot to apply your Human or ARR team to the
FUBAR Cup!
