yup this happened to me. I then went to softwareupdate (from the apple sign) it downloaded something and fixed the problem.

When I click the play button safari dowloads the .jnlp file.
In the top right corner of safari window there is a small arrow pointing down. If you click the arrow it lists the files downloaded, just click then on the .jlnp file you want to launch.
That's how I solved it.
I think it's because I have java disabled by default since last security problems.
