Remenber that while fluff adds to the fun, the main goal is still to have fun! I say keep the WD as you find him fun to use!
He'll die soon anyway ;)
Posted by hale on 2012-03-23 23:07:55
simple.. if you want to keep the player that much, you just craft the best fluffplanation as to why that player was able to avoid the tree's fury. everyone wins :D

I agree with SvenS and hale. If you eat the WD, you probably won't have fun and will stop playing the team. Your challenge is to find a valid 'fluff' reason why the tree didn't eat Rhanaic. Mabye post something in the forums and open it up to the community if you don't get enough ideas here.
Here is something that may help. It is well-known that every good legend/curse has a clause that can be used by the hero to escape a nasty fate. Though sometimes that clause has a twist or down-side that may be worse than the original. So if you want to keep Rhanaic, he'll have to do something. He needs a quest! Something difficult, something he may not like. Something that may hurt his other teammates even more if he is not careful or fails....

I would think, in a fluff sense, that Rahnaic would be too agile for the tree to kill anyway. Either that, or Rahnaic would be the one player the tree "trusts" to always be on his team. From a team sense, I agree with the others, lose him, and the team is unplayable. Adopt a one "exception" rule and keep Rahnaic
Posted by nin on 2012-03-24 00:11:58
And the sneacky WD tricks one of his companions to put his pants: "Sure pall, you are getting relly good at this, you should get a WD post, with those moves..." and that way evil and corupted Rahnaic dodges his fate.
You have fun and a corrupted star WD and Old Man Willow has dinner and fluf is served...
(That nightmare of a WD has to keep terroricing the BBox bashers imho)

"Love conquers everything"
keep him, and fire the tree.
The Gods love the elves, and you as the god of the team can decide to free them from that slavery.

"Love conquers everything"
aaawwww, no suggestion for Rahniac to pay off his debt to the tree in all kinds of xxxrated ways?

Reduce the rage counter by the TV of the player retired.

One must die!!!
We must have blood.
So, either kill that dancer, or chop the tree.

I like the idea of firing the tree instead.
Posted by Nelphine on 2012-03-24 05:59:24
The tree is old man willow - but old man willow had Tom Bombadil; and Tom was able to control Old Man Willow because of how strong he is. Thus, any elf with +Str cannot be eaten by the tree; and anyone who becomes truly important to a +Str elf cannot be eaten by the tree, up to and including preventing the tree from killing anyone at all. 'Truly important' should be pure fluff reasons, +Str is the guideline for who Old Man Willow obeys.

Admit it, you haven't thought this concept through. ;P

Your fluff could be this - Your Tree tries to eat your WD but your WD stat freak fights back and kills the tree. Then you can just replace the tree instead.

In a fight, I'm backing that dancer. He would hit the evil tree with shattering blows from directions he would not even see coming.
Posted by madbone on 2012-03-24 12:46:18
There is not a big reason to further wreck a wrecked team. You deserve some good players. Just say the 1 roll is a fail, like all 1's, he overcame his rage when he saw the beauty.
Posted by phil78 on 2012-03-24 13:43:57
Kill the WD, players are temporary but fluff is forever.
If you save him the team will feel tainted and it'll be the start of the end.
Posted by Wang on 2012-03-24 13:59:21
Have the dancer kill the tree, then play the team properly.
Posted by Nightbird on 2012-03-24 19:26:49
Bah, bend the fluff to find a way to permanently keep that dancer! Maybe he has a magic tree salve he deftly applies whenever the tree rages out? It's an easy fix rabester.

+1 for nin's idea... fluffy tom-foolery and skull-duggery from a smart and shifty wood elf that is far and away more talented than his brothers. If it were not for the sacrifice of another in his place, surely the tree would become insatiable, no?!?..
Good fluff, but have your fluffy cake and eat it too.

Wow, that's more responses than I ever got on any topic in a blog so far! :-D
And a lot of helpful stuff, even though (or maybe because) opinions are divided.
I opened a forum topic and presented a draft of a revised system that I kind of like:
https://fumbbl.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=21637
I don't think any of the slaves would be able to trick the tree (since they're mentally enslaved through magic), unless he'd allow them a higher degree of freedom. That might even be the case in Rahnaics case, since he has such huge potential that can only properly used by himself.
Maybe players above a certain TV get that amount of freedom and won't be killed by the tree, but have a higher chance to escape...
@Nelphine: I like the Tom Bombadil reference, but I'm strongly against anyone on the team being able to control or even influence the tree directly - the elves would just escape as soon as possible!
I'll not let anyone kill the tree (if I can prevent it), he of course wants to become legendary! :-D
@Shraaaag: I thought I'd had thought it through, but no one told me I could get a WD with +ST, +AG and a double and how awesome it is to play one (I'm usually happy to have an AG 3 leaping dwarf or as side stepping longbeard...)! :-D

Kill the Tree and Set the Elves Free.
