Good read, but please god stop calling it Fishbowl ;)
We need a better name, any ideas?

Christer calls it Gamefinder; how about we use that? Fishbowl just makes me think of Macavity's avatar anyway..

I love the attitude. I'm here for fun too. Not to police other people's fun. I mostly play stunty teams these days. It's a lot of fun, come join me. If you are up for a tasty treat (with or without cherries), challenge my Snackmasters if you see them on the Gamefinder.

I like Fishbowl, too.

Very interesting post! I'm not sure what to think yet, but what you say surely has merit.

Awwww, I like Fishbowl. But OK, I admit 'Gamefinder' has a ring to it too. ;)

Fishbowl : Full of Picking Piranhas
Good post, where do we sign up for the Community Warden version of the Fun Police?? they have uniforms and no power right?

It's not in my nature to sit back and let people game the system.
Given the chance, I'll make life uncomfortable for picker and min/maxers.
As I do for people who drive leader board cars in lobbies with people having fun, in fun cars on Forza.
And shotgun window stealers in Black Ops zombies.
Picking is possibly not quite as popular as it was in 4. This is because min-maxing in box is more effective, ranked is the division it once was, and you can't really pick by TV as you could with TR/TS.
However you can sweetspot, and the big min-maxers of box, generally pick by CR in ranked. Which is more effective? I'm not sure, but they tend to play more in box. This could be down to min-maxing is more successful, or because box is a slightly more popular division.

cant you do smaller blogs? these give me head aches ;-) rated 6 just cos i think it will be a good blog ;-)

I realise, only having been here less that two years, I really havn't much experience with what 'picking' might have been at one point. I gather there were alot more players, and there for a lot more of a chance for a handful of coaches to descend upon 138 CR coaches almost exclusively, or whatever the LRB4 equivilent was. Maybe even the remotest numerical similarity still sends minor sparks of disgust dowm Harvestmouse's spine. Bad memories?
I'm 100% for the idea of telling the fun police to shove off. Especially in Ranked, where two people tick a box. When that's just as easy for a new Russian as entering a Black Box match is, there will be enough games to spread around that people can worry about their own, and not everyone else's.
Nice blog.

The_Murker, picking was this thing some people talked about. I played no-tree flings and laughed when I won. Then the new version stole my ingredients.
Now the key is to hit people with chainsaws.
Also, I'm awesome. Purplegoo owes me 20 bucks, and what is this fishbowl thing and why wasn't I consulted?

Hmmmm..... now we have a Goo-Love-In because he "rediscovered" Ranked after abandoning it for the new-looker-on-the-block, Miss BlackBox.
Then he comes running back to Mrs Ranked screaming about how he is sorry he fell for the seductive charms of the new trollop on the block....worse still he drags back in to the family home, the local hustler pythrr!!
Maybe the wise ones never got the Seven Year itch and chased the skirt in the first place :P
PS nice post :-)

I still play both, but would love to get more games in Ranked. However, there certainly are times where only a few coaches are around, and lets just say they aren't interested in playing anything near a fair matchup. I have little problem playing my elves, but some of the others its really tough, FishBowl, GameFinder, or whatever. Hopefully PurpleGoo and Pythrr will add two more brave coaches to the mix.

Sometimes I stumble upon a team of a race that I am interested in at the moment, and get extra intrigued by the 20-3-1 record. then I check the past matches and practically every team this guy has ever played has a losing record. It's damn hysterical but I must confess I also sometimes feel it's unfair and want to tell the guy how lame he is but oh well not gonna start any threads or blogs about it.
Not that I haven't played games skewed in my favour but I at least try to play some of the better coaches once in a while. That said it is a drag trying to get a game in ranked without challenging 'losing' coaches, often a coach 'on my level' comes around and swiftly picks the game with the losing coach I haven't challenged while waiting.
Lately I've been playing a lot in the box again. ;D

That's the key, isn't it. Elves have no problem getting games because they don't have mighty blow in their armory.(or PO, nevermind claw) Opponents with MB on their team.. it's like giving Nuffle an extra option to screw you with bad luck. If you want to be handed out cas in droves every 3rd game you'd just play box at 1700 TV.
Is a guy building zons for a tourney run a picker if he plays no opponents with tackle?
Over, you flat said it, and I get the feeling even PGoo wants to call a lame spade a spade when he sees it every now and again, while both at the same time noting how hard it is to get games sometimes.
I dunno. I can see why this could be one reason some very honest gentlemen play Box. They are not good enough to know if they are being "picked" and what's a fair/good match.. but they are well good enough to win things that look good to them. (meaning skills match-ups or low CR opponents) And something about that dosn't feel right to them. Feeling even remotely like a "picker." So they just let the bot decide.
I feel a bit of that. And I also don't really like how I feel avoiding Mighty Blow. But I don't like the frustration it can bring by turn 3 either.
I'd rather we dump the whole label. I'd rather we dump CR, truth be told. (I guess you'd be left with win/loss, games played, etc. Which is where the real info is. Could we hide everything except games played? Maybe just see you OWN stats, not others?)

I'll also throw this in the mix: I don't mind being picked, to a point. Anybody who has known me for very long knows I play some pretty bad matchups at times. I'm also not afraid to play a killer type team if I know it will be fun (used to play PaulHicks, like playing Carlo, etc) but there are times when I want to get a team tourney ready, and if it aint elves, it usually is very tough to find games.

Please no Fishbowl. All I can think of is the awful club near my university with the same name!
Posted by Niebling on 2012-07-14 05:17:58
Being able to pick is not a good thing for everyone.
I cant play in R, because I know I would never ever choose to play a match where I dont think my team can handle the other team... hence I would lose out a lot on matchups.
I would never play zones vs dwarfs or similar bad matchups, in short I would not be able to stop myself from cherry picking all the time.
Hence the box is where I need to be :)
but its good that R has gotten some love with the new LFG system

+1 for Fishbowl.
And excellent blog, Goo... people also have to reconsider that "picking" doesn't always mean looking for the easiest matchup. Sometimes picking is playing a coach you enjoy playing against, or NOT playing against someone you don't like or you know doesn't like you ;)
