Having seen PeteW's bloated Woodies camping it up in the UI, I took to thinking what I would use my Kickstarter Rage Quitter pledge level to bring back.
I've never really been one for storied teams. I know some put lots of stock in their teams, the fluff, their exploits, but I'm more of a coach man. Less interested in the teams, more in the coaches and how they get on.
To that end, I'm not really one for keeping teams around (apart from in L, where the done thing is to rebuild and go again, even if it takes 3 seasons to get anything more than 11 Zombies). If the pixels have become sub-optimal, most of the time I play too infrequently to invest time recovering / refocussing the team, and I just restart. A long list of retired teams is no scar for me, just keeping your Overview tidy.
There was one exception to this rule. Well, three exceptions. Back in 2009, I got my first three Ranked teams to 99 games all at the same time and was ready for a 'triple hundred', which I used as a bit of an excuse for a
donation event. Having gotten two games into the three back to back matches; I was in the midst of a really awful streak of luck and form, and enacted the classic rage quit. All of my teams bit the dust as I took some much needed rest from Blood Bowl and from FUMBBL, and I never completed the triple hundred. The only team retirements I have ever regretted were these three, and it's great to have the chance to bring two of them back.
The first team on the way back are the
Drogolodytes. Their final, 100th game was against the mighty Paladins of Purple, and they were cut down in their LRB4 prime by me throwing a wobbler. Four years later, they will need a serious revamp to become competitive. There is nothing special about this team, really. Lots of LRB4 Undead won lots of things, and there was nothing impressive in running KO events with the Count under your arm. But they did have sentimental value. I like the theme, and despite a few re-uses, the pixels have never felt as fun since.
The second team on the way back are the
White Isle Idlers Alpha Turbo, the unlucky third team stuck at 99. I really liked this JockMcRowdy Streetfighter suffix brigade, and to be frank, they were the first time that I got Woodies 'right' and recorded a decent record. The template for future Elves of all kinds. They were E.L.F; they took everything on, and they did well. They would have won their 100th too, it was only to be Synn.
The team that didn't make it is
A Plan Comes Together. APCT was essentially a vehicle for
Patton, to this day the only Legend I've ever had (not doing Claw/MB/PO and not playing that often stunts your spps, even in LRB6) and still the joint All-Time best R Hobbo (although the list seems broken). So I don't miss the team, only the player, so they can stay retired.
Four years later, the two teams are more than a bit bloated and will find life tough in the new rules for a while. 18 fans?! But I'm really excited to have them back. It will be good to get the Woodies to 100, good to field the Undead again, and it's nice to have a bit of nostalgia in my nostrils. I'm sure you agree that the teams are far from any good in the new rules, it's more for fun than anything. I wonder what other rage quit teams / players we'll be getting back thanks to the Kickstarter? Probably more storied teams than these with more broken players. But it's all what's important to you, and I'm pretty delighted to have put some cash FUMBBL's way for this opportunity. Hope you did too.
