Dice Tip
When you're shafting somebody with dice, and they're politely commentating on it, don't be silent.

Silence is rude, and when you're running somebody over with luck, being rude is just obnoxious.

"What am I supposed to say?"

Anything sunshine. Use that thing between your ears to come up with a witicism. Hell, gloat - that's better than nothing at all!

Naaaaaaaa... Do not agree
Better silent than intelligent comments.
Personally I prefer that my opponent joke at me and my dice like than something like "Sorry mate, the luck is all my side"... because I perfectly know YOU'RE NOT SORRY AT ALL!!! :-D

NOooooooooo!!!!!! NEVER APOLOGISE. Did I say apologise? Was that anywhere in my post?

I said witicism i.e. joke!
Posted by Redgum on 2012-11-07 11:28:44
I tend toward something along the lines of:
"we've all been on the receiving end, and eventually we'll all be on the giving end. Ride it out. Whinge if you need to, but I'm going to take full advantage of the advantage while I've got it, cause the dice could turn at any time."
Posted by the_cursed_one on 2012-11-07 11:29:23
I have found in the past that anything said when dice pwning people can come across the wrong way thanks to it being in text and no body language to go with it, so normally just stay silent when im doing it.
plus chainsaw i told you i will be like that when playing you
Posted by pythrr on 2012-11-07 11:36:03
completely agree

be human, be social, say "yeah, the dice hate you sir, lol" or something...

Posted by Venetiari on 2012-11-07 11:43:17
Well, actually, I say I'm sorry and mostly it's true. No fun in a dice rape...
Posted by Woodstock on 2012-11-07 12:07:49
I changed your blog topic. Although many on the site understand what you mean, putting such a title on the front page of the website is not something I like to see.
Posted by harvestmouse on 2012-11-07 12:08:27
I find dice whiners like you tedious. Especially when you're borderline rude about it. Most likely yes, I would comment that I'm getting lucky, however I don't feel I should do just to sate you.

Sure we all get annoyed by the dice, some of the time, however blunting your opponents victory by blaming dice is poor sport IMO.

All in all I'd rather not, and keep quiet. All in all I'd rather find another match, and not play coaches who generally whinge about their dice most of the time.
Posted by blocknroll on 2012-11-07 12:29:38
interesting to compare recent match reports at random, say the most recent one and the 9 cas one ;p
Posted by koadah on 2012-11-07 12:33:04
If you really are being polite and friendly about it then I probably would comment that Nuffle is with me tonight, your agile guy has butter fingers today, we're hitting hard, have the good armour on. etc.

But if it sounds as though you are whining it's probably better to not post anything than post what I'm thinking. ;)
Posted by onthejazz on 2012-11-07 12:40:01
A completely silent opponent makes any game duller, in my opinion. An otherwise fun match could have been even more fun, and an uninteresting match becomes a chore to suffer through.

Spiro said it best once:

"Emotions made this game so great, the good feelings and the bad feelings its alltime fun"

"i like your thinking about not showing an emotions during matches !!! These people are false for me. There are people whose calling others as ‘whiners’ and there are people whose are scares to ‘whine’ This is ridiculous for me."
Posted by harvestmouse on 2012-11-07 12:53:19
Yeah, I see your (and Spiro's point). I don't agree with it though.

Posted by onthejazz on 2012-11-07 13:19:18
There is a difference between being outright rude, doing nothing but whining about dice, and simply having a bit of a chat and commenting on stuff as it happens.

If the choices is on the one hand between nothing but outright whining or rudeness and on the other hand complete silence, then I'd probably prefer silence, but commenting on luck is part of commenting on the game in general and having a chat so that you're reminded you're not playing against the Cyanide AI, but an actual human opponent.

All just preference, of course. There is no way people will agree on what makes for "proper chat etiquette" :)
Posted by ellhaynes on 2012-11-07 13:23:31
This is one of the main reasons I regularly walk away from here for long periods of time. We all have good luck and bad luck, but I can't stand players who aren't decent enough to admit that the dice sometimes win them the game.

I have no time for plain old moaners, but I do like chat within the game, and a bit of humility when the dice are screwing one person or the other goes a long way.
Posted by Topper on 2012-11-07 14:11:10
If a person says "I feel sorry for you" or something along those lines, gets into your understanding as "He´s a liar, he really looove this"
Then you should honestly think about why you have this disbelief in other humans.
I mean we play to win and take advantage of the dice, and of course I´d foul that ST 5 wardancer every turn IF i get the chance.
So if he dies or is -ST or whatever that doesn´t make me a person with no empathy, and one that doesn´t recognize that it sucks receiving that punishment. Yes I wanted him out of the game, but killing him made my day no better or worse from it.
Also admitting to have good dices shows that you know about the game (IF you have good dices) - absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I agree completely that almost any kind of chatting is better than a silent game. I don´t mind whining if it´s fair enough, and usually it is. (Even though my perspective might be a little different than "yours"). However total whining and being shot in the shoes I´m a lucker who doesn´t know how to play or whatever comes across the screen every now and then isn´t the perfect way to get a good game relation... Obviously :)
Posted by maysrill on 2012-11-07 15:21:11
Meh, it goes both ways.

I generally find the dice complainers to be the ones with fewer games played (aside from a few "spunky" individuals). The more you play, the more that stuff evens out over time.

Stuff happens. Roughly 50% of the time it happens to you.
Posted by Chainsaw on 2012-11-07 18:21:06
@harvestmouse

As somebody who has whined a lot on many occasions (talking about myself) I know the difference between whining, commentary, and banter.

This was laced with LOLs and "not much I can do" and "let's see what else Nuffle can do for you" after silly dice. It isn't whining IMHO.

It was all met with /crickets. My ST6 TG blocks a skeleton, both downs, the TG dies and the skeleton doesn't even pass armour? LOL. (Quite cool TBH.) Response? /crickets.

Foul niggles the legend skeleton? Well, anybody who has played that team knows that it is all about fouling. How about a "DIE!!!!!!!" Or a, "Eat that!" Or? /crickets.

I ain't looking for sympathy, but 1 sided dice are garbage if your opponent isn't somewhat into it or - at the very least - acknowledging it.

No, you're not obligated to say anything to make anybody feel better. However this is a game between humans. Silence is generally rude. Silence in extreme situations is completely out of order. Go play Cyanide single player on your own if that's your "game".

(I'm not meaning to single out somebody (the_cursed_one), I don't think he intended it, the conversation has since moved on.)
Posted by JackassRampant on 2012-11-07 19:15:24
I can't help but comment on my own unlucky streaks. I like stats, and I track them as they're happening subconsciously. I try to laugh about it.

I LOVE it when my opponent does the same, especially if they take a sanguine approach. It means I'm doing my job.

I hate it when an opponent takes umbrage to my observations. For example, last night, I was playing against a coach who was being REALLY, REALLY sparing in his re-roll use (like not using one of three TRRs on a premature turnover on Turn 14 in a game with no overtime, that kind of sparing). I commented on it, and we had a little talk. Then, on Turn 15 I used a TRR on a push/nothing to pow his blitzer, leaving him with no hope to even the score. I then mentioned that this was an example: a re-roll on a push is normally gratuitous, but this one sealed the win. He got all huffy: that annoyed me.
Posted by Macavity on 2012-11-07 19:19:31
There are two points I would like to make, and as I am the final word on everything, that should solve things.

1) I DO make comments about my own luck to commiserate with my opponent. Pointing out that I am the beloved of Nuffle (due to frequent cat sacrifice) after killing a couple of AV 9 guys is polite. Chat adds to fun.

2) When my opponent politely commentates on my luck when they clearly have no idea how to engineer things to increase chances of success, it's tough to respond. When I hear "Of course your block works! You're getting such good rolls" and my thought is, "If you did your non-dice moves first instead of blocking from the get-go you could have had an extra assist and 2 dice to help you" what should I say? Lie and agree with them? Offer advice they'll gripe over? Or stay silent?

Putting someone in an uncomfortable spot is rude. When someone is just doing their best, insulting them by claiming it's only luck is just obnoxious.

In conclusion, comments should be kept factual to begin with. "I can't get anything working" leaves your opponent free to say, "Yeah, I'm getting all the luck" OR "If you don't mind some advice, you might want to stand up guys before going for rolls and do 3 dice blocks before 1 dice blocks"

Posted by Rooke on 2012-11-07 20:54:20
I usually take a different approach. I don't blame the dice, I blame the players. I realize this isn't logical, but it's a social way to bitch about your luck (or talk about your good luck) without being condescending or unbearable. I've used a lot of Chaos Pact teams so when my Ogre has boneheaded for 3 turns in a row I might say something like: He's been picking his nose for 3 turns! What, is his finger stuck up there?!

Give it a try sometime... Kinda fits with the fluff of being a typically irate, grim minded bloodbowl coach.
Posted by Underworlder on 2012-11-07 21:09:03
Yep... that's the way
Everyone know you're talking about luck (you, your opponent, spectators) but it sounds better if you curse the players instead "dice". It's better "You damn goats are not able to kick the face of a damn goblin" instead of "Your armor rolls are too lucky"
Posted by pythrr on 2012-11-07 21:58:30
quoting Spiro FTW.
Posted by insanitie on 2012-11-08 11:18:54
well i have to say,
when the dice are ridiculously in my favor i don't really like to comment on it, not for rudeness just cause i don't want to turn the eye of the great drunken one on my team and jinx it.
i will be sorry for them,I've been there we've all been there.
if someone whinges and moans about their dice i resist the urge to tell them" toughen up princess" its a dice based game.
just go with the flow and enjoy the blood who evers it is :)
