A cage breaker isn't as essential for HEs as it is for other races (namely skaven, pro elves and woodies). Why? Because av8. Av8 means you can stand your ground, you can harass the opponent cage, you can mark, and you won't be as outnumbered as often as with av7 teams. As.
Since you're good at darkies and skaven (or so you say), i think High Elves are the right mix of them both.
A bit of positional, double column grind as darkies, and a bit of madness and flashyness as skaven. Need to balance the two of them.
For me they're basically pro elves with linemen that i can sometimes leave in contact to mark the opposition.
Just like pros, HEs specialize at passing, which isn't really the best thing in Blood Bowl, but can be pretty good.
All in all, I came to love High Elves. Just, like with any other elven race, remember they're just a lesser spawn of the only true and original dominant elven race: pro elves.

Av7 would waste the opponent's 20k*(number of can openers) TV. such a cheesy choice the pro elves are.mmmh, tasty cheesy elves.

If HEs blitzers wore Hockey masks, they'd be my favorite elven team.
OTOH, it's hard to make that kind of stare with a hockey mask:

The hockey masks are the worst thing to ever happen to the game. Ugly and just ridiculous.

High Elves suck hard until they get developed catchers. Ironic the stars of their team are Av 7. In ranked you can develop some lineman, in the box not so much. And Av 8 really doesn't mean much since you have 6 or 7 other players you have to protect. The lineman are just throw aways.....

1. Numbers are fun.
2. High Elves are fun.
3. I like starting with 3 Rerolls to somewhat make up for the lack of starting skills. Once the team developes they are a lot like Darkies but with the benefit of higher speed and passing skills. I find that many coaches underestimate passing skills. You don't need them in the matches you dominate anyway, but they've won me many close matches, and those are the ones that count, aren't they?
4. I have yet to accomplish a real Sacker (Wrestle Strip Leap) on a High Elf team.
5. Guard is king.

"The hockey masks are the worst thing to ever happen to the game."
Some coaches don't seem to realize that Spiro's monitoring all we're saying.

Blanket AV8 + access to ST3 MA8 is pretty kick-ass (once your TV > 1800 or so).
To me, high elves work best with a duo of guys like these:
