I was going to disagree with this, but it turns out that that both times I've made it to the semifinals (the best I've done) were with teams that I had not been trying to get ready. This first time was with mah (box) Battlefrogs, and only the second time I'd every thrown a team into a tournament (and maybe I would have even gone on but the gentleman timed be out after telling me not to rush on a turn when right before I tried to score), and the second was with my DE after I had just done an ELF season where I played every race. They were in good shape after playing everyone, so I threw them in and made it to the semis (again almost past if not for #%@&$...).
I have not done as well when I have really tried hard to "be ready". Though in fairness to my methods, I have never had the time or inclination to get "as ready" as some folks try to be.

I freely admit I have prepared the Monsters for the FC. Played 15 games mostly against teams that had a relatively low FF (as I needed money badly) and little destructive potential. It worked out, sort of (only one death of an already crippled player and another crippling that would normally lead to retirement). I'm not proud how I did it, but _that_ I did it at all - it wasn't easy.
However, amongst those matches were some against legendary coaches and many were lost. And if the players count wouldn't have been the only thing I cared about, I had to declare failure, as with the retirements that should happen now, I'd be back to 11 players and thereby certainly not "Major ready". And seriously: How many games can one play without suffering some tragic loss that leads to a major setback?
Well, it's the Monsters I'm talking about. Another, more competitive team could have done the same of course (albeit maybe wouldn't have found the same amount of relatively "easy" opponents). But I don't think one can prepare a team over a long period of time directly for a Major. You can only play (and pick) a lot and decide at some point that the team is ready now. It's only easier in Ranked because you can avoid killers - but you can't avoid death!

LOL. Did someone call PainState a team pimper? ;)

I guess one of the problems with picking is you never get any practice against teams that could actually beat you.

I pimp my teams for a major in the box. It's really easy. You just keep playing that "one extra game" to grab that extra skill or recover that MNG guy until you've lost 400TV and have at least two brand new positionals on 0spp. Then you're ready. I didn't do that this FC and was out in the first round as a result. Shame on me.

Although I'm just a pixelhugging picker in general, rather than specifically for majors, this did result in TV 2300 woodies which were too high in TV to find games (at which point they bought a tree, a catcher, and some rerolls).
So yes, Royal Cookie Crumble would be an example of a pimped team, I'd say (and I do recall you cheering them on at the time as well, gloriously bloated bunch of LRB4 elves and all that).
