I've made a fair bit more progress on these 2 teams in the last couple of week.
I’ve finished another 4 skinks so they are all done now. As the models were identical the colour scheme was slightly altered to add some variety with different skin, belts, feathers and skulls colours.
I've also completed 4 hobgoblins, in the end I went for variety in shoulder pads to try and differentiate 4 very similar looking players. My initial thoughts on skin colour were to do them a very dark grey, but this tended to hide the details so I went up to a mid tone. This does make them look rather like muscled ghouls but I do prefer the more humanoid look of the slaves to the traditional hobgoblins. Also grey works a lot better with the team colours of red, gold and black.
Since they are the fodder I’ve given them dark brown trousers so they look a little duller compared to the dwarfs.
The red has been giving me a fair bit of trouble as the idea was to have the armour bright red with very dark shading where it edges gold. However as red is quite a weak colour it is hard to do this without the shading looking stripey or the red ending up either flat and chalky or too dark. There is also the issue with the blocker helmets that the eye holes get filled up with paints if I apply the required amount of coats.
So I’ve had to settle on going up to a bright red but giving it a darker glaze to soften the colour changes, but I do feel it is more appropriate to Chaos Dwarfs as they should be a little dark, sinister and dirty.
The extreme shading should work on the Blockers too, now I've got a handle on it.
Since I'm focusing on the painting of these 2 teams I need a 3rd to satisfy my conversion cravings. There are only 5 races I need to complete all 24 and they are Goblins, Halflings, Ogres, Slann and Vampires. I'm struggling to come up with decent concepts for the ogres and flings and I am considering doing a forest goblin team. For Slann I have almost all the bits I need to start work on them but I am being tempted by a vampire team too.
I recently got my hands on the 3 Lahmian vampires from GW's
Coven Throne the heads and torsos will make great BB players, the boss vamp even has shoulder pads. I just need another set and can mix and match them a little.
What to do for thralls was a bit of a conundrum but then I remembered the
test amazon/elf model I'd done a while ago and I think they could work for that team if they were made a little more elegant.
What really convinced me was the ideas for star players I've had, I'm thinking of having the centrepiece as
Countess Lilith Von Drakenborg, mostly as I want to paint that awesome model up. She is even in a suitable pose if I swap her sword for an open hand and reposition her arm to be cradling the ball to her waist rather than holding a chalice outstretched.
I'd also acquired the
Ghoul king and he could be used as either J Earlice or even Wilhelm Chaney with a lot of extra fur sculpted on.
Helmut Wulf and Crazy Igor could be either badass looking lady thralls or a couple of lovesick blokes, I'd have to paint Igor covered in blood kisses if that were the case.
