Things are progressing well for the Savage Orc team, I now have all the models and bits I need aside from Varag, but more on him later.
The 4 Blitzers have been completed, I was most concerned about these looking too similar to the linemen, both the Black Orcs and Throwers have either much more armour or clothing and poses that distinguish them for the other players. To that end I added lots of small differences with the intention of making them easy to tell apart on the pitch.
They used some of the running legs to show they were MA6, they all got bone or metal jaws and punch daggers, I even made some extra ones to show they were more hitty, thus starting with block. I gave them different shoulder pads, added 40K armoured loin cloths and used heads with topknots as well. Painting wise they were mostly done in the same style but I did paint all their topknots red (the blitzer colour from 2nd edition) and any lizard skins were given red scales, where the linemen had grey scales or furs. A final difference was to paint a similar pattern on all of their left shoulders.
I have just finished undercoating the Black Orcs so they will be next followed by the goblins. I do need to put some work into the troll and stars too since they are mostly in bits at the moment.
Sadly i don’t have any interesting new pics of the nurgle team. The Warriors are almost built but don’t look all that different from the test models I showed in a previous blog. I think I have all the bits to do the team now, though may need to order some zombie bits to nurgle up some of the rotters.
The rest of my painting time has been devoted to finishing off the Norse Dwarfs. Since that project only involves a few models if I get them done that leaves more time to focus on the 2 full teams.
I have finished the 2 markers, the turn marker is just the basic dwarf standard stuck in the ice and painted in the team colours. For the score marker I used the AoW Ironshields standard and painted some stats on it as if it was being used to track the TD’s scored and casualties caused.
Originally I had more elaborate plans for making Zara into a full Valkyrie. But she is such a nice model I didn’t want to ruin her by carving into her hair to add plaits and she’d look awkward holding a spear in that pose. In the end I settled for adding wings to her helmet and some fur to the top of her boots.
That just leaves the apoth and large base filler. I have finished converting the apoth and made a start on painting him but still need to convert the 2 drunks to put on the large base. The plan is to get them done by the 19th Oct so I can post them to Stanrichardson in time for Eurobowl.
Finally I have contributed to the 2 excellent Willy Miniatures fling team Indiegogo campaigns. The
Ultimate Flings will be for me as I really like the models, whilst Topper has asked me to paint up the
Imperial Flings for him once the Orcs are done. The campaign says the models should be delivered in November which is good timing as I will hopefully have most if not all of the orcs done by then.
Halflings are one of the teams I haven't done yet, plus both Deeproot and Puggy are stars I haven't completed so that will bring me 1 step closer to having done all the teams and stars.
As an added bonus both Topper and myself each get 3 free normal sized models (or 1 big guy and 1 normal model), plus for ordering both teams I get captain Rioja since Topper already has him. So Varag will come from there but that is still another 3 models for me to pick from. There are a lot of nice sculpts in their catalogue, I may be tempted by some of their star players, especially if I have not done them yet.
