With the skinks all completed it was now time to focus on the Saurus. In the end I went for the round shoulder pads from the dwarf ironbreakers as I felt they most closely resembled the modern style of American football armour. Also the skinks all had round shoulder pads taken from kroot and those were of a similar style. I chose a design for the right pad that was not too Dwarfy and another for the left that had space for their player number.
I kept to the same colour scheme as the skinks, light blue skin with dark blue armour plates and red armour with gold details. Whilst this is super generic for Lizardmen it does work well on them. The darker colours ended up a bit chalky after being highlighted and were given some glazes. This had the benefit of making the scales more natural and I prefer a slightly glossy look on their armour as well.
I found the painting the gold parts the most tricky as gold paint doesn’t thin very well. It tends to either go gritty if put on too thick or when thinned down it requires many coats and can get a bit blobby. In the end the gold received a lot of washes and glazes as I tried to naturally darken it so it was closer to bronze than shiny gold. I found turquoise glaze gave me the best effect, particularly when combined with sharp highlights of bone on the edges. I think the most pleasing way to do gold would be NMM (Non Metallic Metallic’s), using shades of brown and yellow to simulate the shine of gold. I don’t think it works when using greys to make silver, but if done right it looks awesome for gold, even moreso when combined with red armour. However it is a technique I find difficult and very time consuming.
Hemlock uses the skink rider from the Troglodon with very little modification. I had to reposition his toes to make them flatter and convert his spear into 2 knives, but otherwise he was left as is. The increased sized along with helmet and jewellery make him stand out from the normal skinks not to mention carrying weapons.
I wanted to change the colouring of him as well, my initial plan was to give him dark skin and light scales but I really liked the dark blue scales on the rest of the team. Instead I gave him a much paler shade of blue skin and a pale almost white belly. For his gold armour I added some red and white decoration as well.
With 8 skinks, Hemlock and 6 saurus done the bulk of the team has been completed. This gives me about 4 weeks to finish the Krox, SliBli and display base leaving me nicely on schedule. I am anticipating the Krox being the hardest model to complete as he needs quite a lot of greenstuff work to fill in gaps and convert him into a more lizardesque looking model.
I’ve already finished converting Sli and he will be painted in a colour scheme very similar to that of the rest of the team. He is already considerably larger and more elaborate than the rest of their team mates so will stand out. I am going to give him lighter skin though as that is the sign of a blessed saurus and will be a good contrast with his dark blue scales.
For the display base I want to have a mosaic of the NAF logo on an grass pitch with the jungle somewhat encroaching. The tricky part will be fitting this mosaic onto some of the bases so I am thinking of shrinking it for just the krox and 2 stars.
For the rest of the bases I’ll be using flock and probably some static grass and maybe even a few puddles and long grass.
