The NAF have again asked me to paint a team for the grand tournament in Nottingham on the 4th and 5th of May. As I’d already built the Khorne team last year and have not done them yet I chose this team.
I’d already chosen a colour scheme, using the classic Khorne colours of red, black and bone and mixing them up a bit, along with switching silver for the traditional Bronze/Brass.
Initially I started on the Bloodborn Marauders, as linemen are the core of the team and it is always good to get the colouring sorted with them before going on to the positionals. One concern with choosing bone armour was that it might end up being too close to flesh and overload the model with it all being the same colour. To try and mitigate that I gave the marauders a darker skin tone and also varied these. Though this was mostly for my own benefit to not get bored painting the exact same skin tone 8 times, it also helped differentiate those players which used the same body. It’s not uncommon for Blood Bowl models to have more bare skin, so I’ve got pretty good at painting that too.
Painting black is always tricky as too much highlighting turns it grey and not enough makes it look flat, the highlights can also look different once the paint dries too. So the trousers are probably a bit too grey, but I did like the shading, so left them as is. The straps, belts etc were mostly dark brown, with some painted grey/white to simulate wrapped cloth or just add variety.
I went for a more cream coloured bone for the armour, this was to help the models really pop, since Khorne tends to be darker. As always a few scratches were added on top of those sculpted on to simulate battle damage. I had considered adding lots of blood spatters to the armour, but worried this would either look bad or make the models too red. The loincloths were painted red and I was again trying out the technique where some small lines of highlight were painted on to make the material look a little battered and also not too smooth. For the edging of the armour, instead of a metal I went for a deep, blood red and really like how that looks next to the pale bone armour.
Anything obviously metal like spikes, buckles or jewellery was painted silver, as these were mostly small I went for a pretty simple highlight rather than the more involved techniques large metal areas for other models. Some models had skulls on them and these were shaded with grey to represent old bone and help set them apart from the armour. It was pretty time consuming and I was starting to regret having so many skulls on the bases. The rest of the base was simply drybrushed brown, sometimes getting a little on the skulls since they were often part buried.
For the Khorngors I went for a mixture of skin colours and painted these with small lines to give the impression of them having short fur. Reddish brown is the most common colour, but I did one of them grey as he was already sharing a lot of parts with another model and this helped them both look more unique.
The models still need numbering and varnish added, but will do those for the whole team at once. GW finally released the Gnashrak Blackhoof model and I have bought him, if I have time will add him to the team in place of Borak along with Akhorne and Max since they are all Khorne themed.
