I have completed the blitzers now, so that is all 16 normal players done with 2½ months still to go.
I was very keen for the all the positionals to stand out from each other and represent their role on the pitch. Slann blitzers are a little unique in that they are 1 of only 2 models that has access to both the strength and agility skills. They are expensive and come with some quirky skill which means that some coaches take only a few of them or even skip them entirely.
As they are much heavier hitters than the linemen as well as being faster I used bloodletter bodies since they are suitably athletic and aggressive looking. The spiked fur on their back along with more uniform bumps made them look more violent.
They got more armour than the linemen too, with helmets, thigh and forearm guards to go with their shoulder pads. This had the added bonus of meaning there was more blitzer red on the models. Since they are to be in the think of the action all their armour was suitably bashed and battered.
I also painted their skin slightly darker, starting with a darker shade of green and shading up to the base colour used on the linemen with darker washes and glazes. As with orcs and lizardmen I think the darker skin makes them look more weathered and tougher. From the comparison pic you can see all 3 players have similar skin colouring with white bellies. Though the blitzers have muscles compared to guts of the linemen.
That just leaves the Krox and 2 stars to paint up of the models, as well as a display base to make.
In my last blog the plans for having all the players standing on lily pads did not go down that well. On reflection that may well be the case as it does risk them looking too cartoony. I did try to convert these players to look like the images of the classic slann, which do have amphibianic features but are deliberately not just anthropomorphic frogs. Unlike skaven or beastmen they are not mutated from Warhammer world creatures but are aliens with some characteristics in common with frogs.
So I am starting to go back to the swamp idea, but to have it mostly water with the players standing on islands and the NAF logo on a large central island with the Krox and stars. Something along the lines of the image below. It has the added bonus that it will be easier to do and the individual players’ bases should still look good when they are not on the display base.
