Due to a holiday and work commitments I've not done quite as much as I'd hoped since my last blog, but things are starting to come together.
The Black Orcs ended up being the most time consuming players so far. It took a while to get their skin right as I wanted them to be noticeably darker than the rest of the team but found they went too grey when I lightened dark green so ended up adding black to the mid-green I used for the rest of the team. There is some variation in skin colour but I don't think that is such a bad thing.
Painting the chipped armour is also the most time consuming part and with much more of it than the rest of the team it took me a whole week just to do that. That was somewhat mitigated by them having less exposed skin so not having as many tattoos.
For the Nurgle team I needed to do a little tweaking of the warriors and changed the shoulder pads on one and gave another of them a claw. I want them to look suitably powerful and repulsive since they are ST4 and heavily armoured. I plan on filling in gaps and adding a few rotten bits to them with greenstuff before painting up a test model. It will be a nice change from the Orcs.
The Pestigors have been assembled as well, with one of them getting the extra arms mutation. They are a little more mobile since they have the runner and blitzing role.
I’ve also been approached by Wilf to do him a goblin team based on the
Gaspez circus models along with goblin stars. They have a lot of wacky outfits so there should be some conversion potential. Neither of us were fans of their trolls so I have got the Willy Miniatures
Underworld troll as he comes with a top hat and
troll 2 throwing a goblin since both fit the theme.
That brings me to another future project in the shape of the Imperial and Ultimate flings. I really liked the Ultimate version and Topper was a fan of them Imperial flings so i ordered both teams and they arrive a couple of weeks ago. As part of the kickstarter we got some free models and discounts on others so got Varag for free and the trolls i mentioned earlier at a discount. I’ll be starting on the Imperial Flings once the other teams are completed and will hopefully get round to doing the Ultimate one someday.
Those 2 teams will bring me that much closer to having completed all 24 races, leaving just Ogres, Vampires and Slann. My aim of doing all 56 stars will be that much closer too. Some of the stars are not very popular so I will likely have to do them solo and have been collecting models I think would be suitable.
So I have made a Raknash backstabber model from a goblin sticker combined with a normal hobgoblin. Him being slightly smaller than a normal hobgoblin seems appropriate as he is extra sneaky and comes with 2 knives.
Finally I’ve been once again asked to paint up a team for the NAF GT in May 2014. The previous teams I’d done were Khemri in 2012 and Norse Dwarfs in 2013, (the team before that was Undead by nazgob) so something less bashy seemed appropriate this year.
I have a complete 2nd edition human team, but the models are not as good as the 2nd ed skaven or elfs and a bit dull.
The new skink terradon riders have a lot of potential for bloodbowl and the carnasour rider would be ideal as slibli and hemlock, but I have already done lizardmen twice and don’t think I could top purplegoo’s saurus and krox.
The slann team in my last blog would be another possibility, however they will require a lot of work and I’m still not 100% certain how well they will turn out.
The new plastic dark elves are really nice and I’ll probably get the witch elves just to use with my vampires, the black guard/executioners would be great blitzers, with the dark riders as assassins and warlocks as runners.
The idea I’m favouring at the moment is a high elf team. I had already got a bit excited about the new models and went a little crazy on e-bay, shelling out to get the bits I wanted from American sellers. They do suffer a little from resembling fantasy elves a bit much, but these newer plastics have smaller helms, shoulder pads and shorter scale mail over their legs.
I’ve put together some test models for linemen with open and closed helmets.
