With the main team done it was time to finish off the extras. I wanted to give the cheerleaders different coloured hair, but to not make them stand out more than the witches. I went for blondes and browns, but in the end don’t think these quite worked with the grey skin. Rest of their colouring was to match the team colours with a mix of white and green pompoms.
Eldril was a star player I had painted a long while back, using the 2nd edition model. The new version was a fair bit bigger and more detailed. I like to make stars match their teams, but also stand out. So I took the existing design, with the chequered legging and switched it to match the green, white and black scheme. He still got red hair and blue accessories to make him unique.
The last thing to complete the team was a coin and 2 markers. These were kept to team colours and I experimented with some NMM for the knife blades and the coin rims, with mixed success. For some reason pics of coins never turn out well, I had the same issue with the Chaos Dwarf team.
The last thing to do was apply varnish, add numbers and paint the bases. I was asked to keep these simple, with just flock and some marking and green rims. Luckily I had some of the classic goblin green left over and was able to use that. The rims also got a player number added via transfer and I painted the number on the shoulder pads too.
It had been a while since I painted a team and was nice to do something with standard GW models that had a few conversions thrown in and a different colour scheme.
With them out the way it was time to get back working my way through the BB16 stars.
Madcap Miggz
Madcap Miggz used the excellent AoS squig hopper model with very minimal conversions. The illustration of them was pretty limited, so I kept with a classic red for Toofy Terror and black, yellow and brown for Miggs.
I began with the mouth and the tongue and this proved to be really hard. Getting it the right shade of pink was a challenge along with having the shading look good. In the end I had to completely redo it and although I wasn’t fully satisfied it was an improvement. Toofy’s skin went much better, I really like painting red and his skin had a lot of interesting shapes that were fun to shade. Even though he only had a few colours I spent much long on the squig than Miggz, but it turned out to be a fun model. I hope he gets added to the BB20 rules someday.
Dribl and Drull
With a bit of extreme good fortune I decided to paint the skink twins up just as they were being re-added back into BB20. They followed pretty standard Lizardman colours with blue skin, darker blue scales and red kit with white details and gold decoration. They did have a few distinguishing features, such as Drull’s ratskin cloak and the feathers. One thing I wanted to do was for there to be a more gradual change from scales on their back to paler underbelly. So I painted smaller scales onto their sides and limbs and these ended up looking really good. I was also pleased with how the feathers came out. They both had very large eyes and I was able to add extra detail to these as well.
For the bases I went through a few ideas, even buying some plants from a railway shop. Sadly those were paper cut outs, which didn’t look good outside the box. Instead I used plastic aquarium plants, these were already green but I repainted them.
Anqi Panqui
Anqi was painted in very much the same way as the skink twins. His skin and scales were a little darker as that always makes the models look a bit hardier and more weathered.
I’ll need to get back to painting teams now as the NAF GT team is due in the spring of 2023.
