The last couple of months have been spent working on the NAF GT skaven team. How this team is awarded has changed from previous years, no longer will it go to the champ, but is now instead a straight lottery. One random coach taking part will win the team.
More progress has been made with another 3 players completed recently, bringing it up to 11.
I wanted all the players to unique, so had to stand doing conversions for the remaining players. This lineman uses the legs from the 2nd stormvermin. He has a tail swapped from another lineman and his left arm is taken from an AoS stormvermin.
Another torso swap was done to this player to differentiate him, his right arm was swapped with another lineman as well whilst his head came from the spare thrower. I wanted a lot of players to have unique tails and started swapping them about, however some of these were very thin and this meant his ended up being from 3 different models.
Having already used up the parts from existing gutter models I had to start looking elsewhere for bits. His legs come from the spare thrower as they are lightly armoured and in a running pose, I did remove the ball from his tail as both throwers already have one. His torso is from an AoS clanrat and I could even use the weapon arm as they come with weeping blades now. His cloak is from an old AoS plastic gutter runner.
The amount of time spent on this team was not entirely by choice, they are due the end of April which does leave me plenty of time. It is no bad thing to get ahead as I can add extra stuff like stars, a display base and tokens etc if I finish early. However I had started work on a 24 strong undead team earlier and had 21 models completed but got stuck on the last 3. These were the; slann, ape and elf zombies to finish off the team.
It was this model that was holding things up, I couldn’t get him on his own from the other companies I had ordered from. In the end I had to order just him and had to pay 10 Euros for one model. He’s perfect as he is and won’t need any changes.
I had already completed a dark elf and wood elf zombie using existing models with no conversion. This was to represent either high or pro elves as they can be pretty similar since back in the 2nd edition days there was just a generic good elf team.
I delved into my bits box to make this player, his legs come from an old 3rd edition dark eldar warrior as these look a lot like light sports wear with some armour plating, ideal for elves. His torso was from a plastic zombie I’d bought to use as grizzly trophies, as he had no waist I pinned him to the legs and extended his spine whilst adding extra guts with greenstuff. The torso came with no arms and these were taken from skeletons with a glove from a dark elder and greenstuff to fill in the gaps.
His crest is from the AoW berserker dwarfs whilst his mask from an eldar harlequin but chopped down to show part of the zombie face behind it. I really like pose and think he looks appropriately shambolic.
This was easily the most involved conversion, I had considered buying a single ape and zombyfying it up, however it proved to be even more expensive to ship and I wasn’t that big a fan of the models anyway.
Instead I once again scoured my bits box for parts to make my own version of a zombie ape blood bowl player. One of the advantages of having been in the hobby so long and often buying models just because I think they are cool is that I have loads of different bits from various GW armies. I’d bought a couple of dire wolves a few years back to make some werewolf conversions and fortunately had kept the leftover bits. Their limbs had potential to be used as those of a zombie ape having both fur and exposed muscles and bone. It did need some changes such as snipping off the rear feet and reversing the legs.
I had planned on using a beastman torso for him, but it seemed a bit small and instead swapped in a black orc. Parts of his arm, feet and his head were from the savage orcs range as well.
This created a very roughly made zombie ape, but required a lot of greenstuff filling and the addition of fur to cover gaps. I also had to sculpt all of his head aside from one eye and his mouth. To keep up the zombie look I drilled out one eye to make it an exposed eye socket.
I’m rather pleased with how he turned out as he is made from some pretty obscure parts.
Hopefully I can paint up these last 3 models and finish the bases to get the team done before I move in 2 weeks.
